It is likely most parents goal to protect their children. However, this isn’t always possible especially in cases of sickness, disease, and cancer. Despite these horrific trials children sometimes go through, it is still a parent’s goal to ensure their child is comfortable; to make the best medical decisions for their child; to protect their child to the best of their ability given the circumstance.
Dr. Saad Saad, as a pediatric surgeon, has this same goal for his patient, to make them as comfortable as possible. Throughout his career, Dr. Saad has been on a constant mission to improve methods and procedures that will allow his patients to feel more comfortable. As a proficient pediatric surgeon, who has executed thousands of often complex surgeries, Dr. Saad has created two inventions that aide in making his patients more comfortable.
His first invention is a device that helps locate where a catheter is located once it has entered the body. In order to understand how this device works, it is important to know what a catheter is. In essence a catheter is a tube that is inserted into the body to help treat some ailments or help doctors perform medical procedures. The task of getting a catheter put into the correct location is no easy feat. Typically, locating where a catheter is located is accomplished by taking an x-ray or having an MRI. Neither of which are the safest or most convenient. Dr. Saad Saad’s device allows doctors to locate where the catheter is within the body without the use of a machine. Essentially, the tip of the catheter holds a magnetic material inside the coil and two wires within its walls. This combination allows the doctor to use an external device to locate the catheter. Once the external device is over the tip of the catheter the external device lights up, telling the doctor exactly where the catheter is. This device, because of the complexities involved in manufacturing it, hasn’t been widely implemented in the medical community; however, it is Dr. Saad’s hope that within the next few years it will be.
Dr. Saad Saad’s second invention improves a doctor’s ability to successfully and more easily conduct endoscopic procedures. An endoscope is a camera like device that allows doctors to see inside their patient’s body. The problem with endoscopic procedures is that the bodies fluids get in the way of and fog up the camera, which obviously makes the doctors job more difficult. Dr. Saad’s invention morphs a classic endoscope’s anti-fog port into a suction and irrigation device. This device allows the doctor to irrigate and suction the area in which he/she is trying to see; once this is done, the doctor has a clear view, allowing him to more easily and successfully complete his/her job.
